P09S04: Cataract Surgery Postoperative Care

Bottom line: Information on Cataract Surgery Postoperative Care was used to modify the management of the patient (patient education about monitoring symptoms after cataract surgery). There were no information-related patient health outcomes

Level 1 outcome (situational relevance): On August 1, 2008, P09 did a search at work, by themselves, and after an encounter with a patient. They retrieved one information hit about endophthalmitis. The search objective was to fulfill an educational or research objective. “[The patient was] a woman […] in her early 80s. […] It just so happened that this highlight [was emailed] that week [as part of my participation in the research]. So I looked at it and evaluated, and had some good information on the postoperative evaluation [for cataract surgery]. […] That particular day, I was at the pre-op [for this patient]. […] It [the information] was useful for me. […] She [the patient] didn't have any problems [post-op], but it's important for me to know what to look for [patient education and follow-up].” According to P09, e-Therapeutics+ was the only source for information, and the found information was relevant.

Level 2 outcome (cognitive impact): One hit was associated with a report of positive cognitive impact (see table). Regarding practice improvement, P09 stated: “[My practice is improved] just being more focused in terms of evaluating, when people come back, evaluating for those patients’ floaters, and signs or symptoms of endophthalmitis.”

Level 3 outcome (information use): Information on endophthalmitis was retrieved, and used to modify the management of the patient (information used as presented in e-Therapeutics+). “When I say [that the information was used to] modify [my management] it means I just, specifically, look for these things, and ask for them specifically […] [If I wouldn’t have read this information], I wouldn't have discussed it.”

Level 4 outcome (patient health): There was no clear relationship between the information use and patient health outcomes.
